The town of West Boylston is located in Worcester counties. The 2000 census noted the population at 7,481 with a 2010 projected population of 7,447. West Boylston includes the village of Oakdale.
Incorporated in 1808, West Boylston thrived due to such industries as textiles. West Boylston's growth and prosperity was halted, however, when the state determined that West Boylston would be included among a number of neighboring towns for the sight of the Wachusett Reservoir, a new source of drinking water for the city of Boston. Over 2,200 acres of land in West Boylston were flooded for the Reservoir, including the center of the town. Although many of the buildings were relocated away from the flooded areas, much of the old town center now lays at the bottom of the Reservoir.
Today, West Boylston is a lovely bedroom community for the city of Worcester and other neighboring towns.
